Beagle History
The beagle is an old breed, originating in the 1700s in Britain. They were developed as scent hounds and used for hunting rabbits, foxes and other small game. The term "beagle" was first used as early as 1475 to describe a small hound, but where the name originated is unknown.
The beagle eventually made its way to North America where they have been popular family pets ever since. Beagles have also been successfully used by law enforcement agencies and are one of the most common breeds found in K-9 units today. In 1885, the AKC recognized them under their Hound group classification which they remain recognized by today.
Beagles are beloved companions thanks to their sweet and outgoing personalities combined with their intelligence and affinity for adventure. They are full of energy and make great family dogs with lots of fun activities like running around off-leash or playing fetch that can keep them entertained for hours on end!
