Bernese Mountain Dog History
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large and strong breed originating from the Swiss Alps. The breed is believed to have descended from mastiff-type dogs used by ancient Roman soldiers. Throughout its history, the Bernese Mountain Dog has been used as a farm dog and draft animal, as well as for herding cattle and pulling carts of produce to market. The dogs were valued for their strength and loyalty. In 1892, the first Bernese Mountain Dogs arrived in America when two were imported to Colorado. They eventually made their way to the east coast where they gained popularity among farmers and ranchers. This robust working class mountain dog was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1937 under its Working Group classification; it rose quickly in popularity due to its hardworking nature and friendly temperament with people.
