Chow Chow History
The Chow Chow is an ancient dog breed that has been in existence for over 2,000 years. Originally bred as a hunting and working dog, this regal looking breed was once known as the "Wild Dog of China." The Chow's lineage remains largely unknown due to its early domestication. It did however gain recognition for the first time in 1880 when it was exhibited at a London show. In 1903, the first Chow made its second appearance in front of the public at Westminster Kennel Club where it received much acclaim. Throughout its history, Chows were used for various purposes such as guarding homes and livestock, pulling carts or sleds and even assisting in some bemused food hunting practices. During World War II, many countries diminished their chow population; however with advancements from animal welfare organizations like Humane Society International (HSI), they have seen a steady rise ever since. On October 1st 2020 ,Chow Chows were recognized by American Kennel Club under the Non-Sporting group classification
