Pomeranian History
The Pomeranian dog breed is believed to have originated in the region of Pomerania, which lies on the coast of Germany and Poland. It is a descendant of larger sled dogs from Iceland and Lapland, specifically the German Spitz breeds.
The Pomeranian first appeared in England during Queen Victoria’s reign and soon after gained notoriety when she was pictured with her beloved pom “Windsor” and had him featured in many paintings. Following Queen Victoria's unveiling of "Windsor", the popularity of these small dogs exploded, particularly amongst fashionable society women who valued their lapdog status.
In 1888, an American breeder became interested in the breed and imported several examples to begin developing it further each passing year. The American Kennel Club (AKC) accepted this popular toy-sized pup into its stud book in 1898 under its Toy Group classification. Today, they remain one of America’s favorite pet breeds thanks to their spunky personalities, outgoing nature, intelligence, loyalty and affectionate disposition towards people.
