Shih Tzu History
The Shih Tzu is an ancient breed that has been around for centuries. The breed originated in China, where it was considered a symbol of wealth and power. It is believed to be a cross between the Pekingese and Lhasa Apso breeds.
The first Shih Tzus arrived in the United States in the 1930s after being brought back from expeditions to Asia by European explorers. In 1969, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the breed under its Toy Group classification.
The Shih Tzu quickly became popular as a family pet due to its endearing personality, affectionate nature and low-maintenance grooming needs. They are intelligent dogs that require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation or they can become bored easily which could lead to destructive behavior.
